China over the weekend...

10-22-2017     Mr. Xi served notice that China has global ambitions and that its system of authoritarian capitalism has nothing to learn from Western values of democracy and human rights.    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/china-and-the-us-clash-or-convergence/article36676879/

9-13-2018      Germany started drafting its legislation after a number of high-profile takeovers by Chinese buyers, including a 2016 $5 billion purchase of Kuka, Germany’s most advanced robotics manufacturer, by Chinese appliance maker Midea.
Concerned about China’s growing appetite for its most advanced technologies, Germany last year changed its laws to improve the government’s ability to block acquisitions of stakes as small as 25 percent stake in “critical infrastructure” industries.
Just last month, the Chinese nuclear equipment manufacturer Yantai Taihai dropped its bid for the German metal tool maker Leifeld, a key company for Germany’s nuclear power industry.  Berlin had hinted that it was prepared to use its new power to veto takeovers.  https://www.politico.com/story/2018/09/13/china-us-investment-788834

3-6-18   In September, President Donald Trump blocked an attempt by Chinese government-backed Canyon Bridge Capital Partners to buy Portland, Ore.-based Lattice Semiconductor Corp. after CFIUS recommended the president block the deal.
Xcerra Corp., a Norwood, Mass., provider of testing equipment for semiconductors and electronics, last month terminated its sale to a Chinese group, citing difficulty in securing CFIUS approval for the $580 million deal.

10-31-18   Two Chinese intelligence officers and a group of alleged hackers have been charged in San Diego on accusations of infiltrating the computer networks of private companies in the U.S. and abroad to steal plans for a turbofan engine to be used in commercial airliners, according to the indictment unsealed Tuesday.

The five-year conspiracy was led by Zha Rong, a division director of the Jiangsu Province Ministry of State Security, and Chai Meng, a section chief — both supervisors overseeing human intelligence and intellectual property theft operations within the ranks of the Chinese government, according to the indictment.  https://taskandpurpose.com/china-jet-engine-hacking-conspiracy

10-9-18    Beijing already dominates the world trade system, with more than 120 countries counting China as their main trading partner. It's coming to dominate the investment system, too.  And its Belt and Road initiative embodies its plan to dominate vital infrastructure over most of the planet. https://www.smh.com.au/national/stealth-doorway-china-s-stunning-server-hack-shows-its-true-hand-20181008-p508co.html

8-13-18   Those smart, internet of things (IoT) devices, which numbered just over 8 billion in 2017, require platforms to “plug into” and a significant amount of those devices have agreements with platforms controlled by Chinese nationals with obvious ties to the Chinese government.  That’s right, not kidding: the communist Chinese government may have access to your home via those smart devices.
This entire trend of the internet of things and smart devices is only going to accelerate: there are estimates that by 2020 there will be over 20 billion IoT devices, all plugged in to some platform somewhere. What retailers are not telling you is that those technological wonders likely rely on platforms and cloud storage controlled by Chinese nationals – sure it’s in the fine print on page 36 of the disclosures, but when was the last time you actually read all of the fine print?     https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/while-everyone-obsesses-over-russia-china-is-stealing-our-data-blind

1-8-19   Lest we forget: China’s vast prison system executes more people annually than the rest of the world combined while continuing its practice of harvesting their organs for profit....Alongside China’s surge in wealth and conspicuous consumption in places like Shanghai and the larger megacity of Chongqing, the nation remains locked down in many ways, without free access to information and with cameras watching everyone 24/7.  https://news-decoder.com/2019/01/40-years-china-progress/
