Scientists studying the biological effects of uranium in the 1960s reported that it targets the DNA.

8-21-2004   Scientists studying the biological effects of uranium in the 1960s reported that it targets the DNA. Marion Fulk, a nuclear physical chemist retired from the Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab and formerly involved with the Manhattan Project, interprets the new and rapid malignancies in soldiers from the 2003 war as “spectacular … and a matter of concern.”
This evidence shows that of the three effects which DU has on biological systems – radiation, chemical and particulate – the particulate effect from nano-size particles is the most dominant one immediately after exposure and targets the Master Code in the DNA. This is bad news, but it explains why DU causes a myriad of diseases which are difficult to define.
In simple words, DU “trashes the body.” When asked if the main purpose for using it was for destroying things and killing people, Fulk was more specific: “I would say that it is the perfect weapon for killing lots of people.”...
The first DU weapons system was developed for the Navy in 1968, and DU weapons were given to and used by Israel in 1973 under U.S. supervision in the Yom Kippur war against the Arabs.
The Phalanx weapons system, using DU, was tested on the USS Bigelow out of Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in 1977, and DU weapons have been sold by the U.S. to 29 countries....
A medical doctor in Northern California reported being trained by the Pentagon with other doctors, months before the 2003 war started, to diagnose and treat soldiers returning from the 2003 war for mental problems only.
Medical professionals in hospitals and facilities treating returning soldiers were threatened with $10,000 fines if they talked about the soldiers or their medical problems. They were also threatened with jail....
A Japanese professor, Dr. K. Yagasaki, has calculated that 800 tons of DU is the atomicity equivalent of 83,000 Nagasaki bombs. The U.S. has used more DU since 1991 than the atomicity equivalent of 400,000 Nagasaki bombs. Four nuclear wars (apparently Balkan, Gulf War I & II & Afghanistan) indeed, and 10 times the amount of radiation released into the atmosphere from atmospheric testing!    -Dr. Leuren Moret           http://www.globalresearch.ca/depleted-uranium-dirty-bombs-dirty-missiles-dirty-bullets/677

3-19-2013   Research conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 2006 to 2007 in four areas in Iraq determined that radioactivity from depleted uranium did not pose a significant health risk to civilians who might encounter residues or inhale airborne radioactive dusts, but the IAEA warned that civilians could be exposed to higher doses if they enter vehicles destroyed by depleted uranium munitions.    http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/15168-depleted-uranium-contamination-is-still-spreading-in-iraq

During 2004, the US military carried out two massive military sieges of the city of Fallujah, using large quantities of DU ammunition, as well as white phosphorous.
"We are concerned about the future of our children being exposed to radiation and other toxic materials the US military have introduced into our environment," Dr Haddad added.
A frequently cited epidemiological study titled Cancer, Infant Mortality and Birth Sex-Ratio in Fallujah, Iraq 2005-2009 involved a door-to-door survey of more than 700 Fallujah households.
The research team interviewed Fallujans about abnormally high rates of cancer and birth defects.
One of the authors of the study, Chemist Chris Busby, said that the Fallujah health crisis represented "the highest rate of genetic damage in any population ever studied".   http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2013/03/2013315171951838638.html

2005.      In April of 2003, the World Health Organization said they expect global cancer rates to increase 50 percent by the year 2020.

Infant mortality is going up again all over the world.  This is an indicator of the level of radioactive pollution.

When the U.S. and Russia signed the partial test ban treaty in 1963, the infant mortality rate started dropping again, which is normal.  Now they are going up again.  Its the global pollution with this (d.u.) radiation.   -Moret

8-27-04    AFP asked Marion Fulk, a retired chemical physicist who built nuclear bombs for more than 20 years at Lawrence Livermore lab, if he thought that DU weapons operate in a similar manner as a dirty bomb. "That's exactly what they are," Fulk said. "They fit the description of a dirty bomb in every way."

According to Fulk, more than 30 percent of the DU fired from the cannons of U.S. tanks is reduced to particles one-tenth of a micron (one millionth of a meter) in size or smaller on impact.

"The larger the bang" the greater the amount of DU that is dispersed into the atmosphere, Falk said. With the larger missiles and bombs, nearly 100 percent of the DU is reduced to radioactive dust particles of the "micron size" (virus size -ed) or smaller, he said....
"Anybody, civilian or soldier, who breathes these particles has a permanent dose, and itís not going to decrease very much over time," Leonard Dietz, a retired nuclear physicist with 33 years experience told the New York Daily News. "In the long run - veterans exposed to ceramic uranium oxide have a major problem."

"Inhaled particles of radioactive uranium oxide dust will either lodge in the lungs or travel through the body, depending on their size. The smallest particles can be carried through cell walls and "affect the master code - the _expression of the DNA," Fulk told AFP.

Inhaled DU can "fool around with the keys" and do damage to "practically anything," Fulk said. "It affects the body in so many ways and there are so many different symptoms that they want to give it different names," Fulk said about the wide variety of ailments afflicting Gulf War veterans.    -Bollyn        http://rense.com/general56/dep.htm
