Spain has become the leading destination for migrants crossing the Mediterranean into the EU, with more than 60,000 people arriving in the country last year, according to UNHCR data.  But Morocco is stressing there could have been many more.   During the summer it launched a crackdown on immigrants trying to sneak into Spain and says it has foiled 70,000 attempted illegal crossings.

3-10-19  Migration to Italy via the Mediterranean, in recent years the biggest gateway to Europe for those fleeing war or poverty in Africa and Asia, has nearly ground to a halt, showing the effectiveness of controversial efforts by European authorities to stem the inflow.
In the first two months of this year, 262 seaborne migrants reached Italy, compared with 5,200 in the same period last year and more than 13,000 in 2017.  https://www.wsj.com/articles/migration-from-libya-to-italy-once-europes-gateway-dwindles-after-clampdown-11552219204

"We already have 5 million Italians living in poverty.  So I can't host hundreds of thousands of other people from the rest of the world."  In 2017, roughly 130,000 people applied for asylum in Italy, second only to Germany in the European Union for the number of first-time applicants.  Refugee status was granted to 6,827 people; about 27,000 others received other forms of protection.
More than 119,000 migrants arrived in Italy by sea in 2017, according to the U.N. migration agency.  Figures from the Italian interior ministry show a dramatic drop in 2018, with only 23,011 migrants and refugees arriving--a decline of more than 80 percent.  https://www.npr.org/2019/01/01/679840656/rejected-by-italy-thousands-of-migrants-from-africa-risk-the-alps-to-reach-franc
