The Sun is ours! Unwritten are the laws of the heart but only therein does justice dwell.

35.  Gathering flaming hearts you bear them as gifts to us.  The power of harmony will announce triumph to the pure in spirit. Teach smilingly, joyfully create, your ears hearkening to the song.  By pure love shall I preserve compassion in my bleeding heart!  Grant me, O Lord, the mastery of self!
187.  It is wise not to worry but to strive joyfully.  You must think, for thoughts create deeds.
215.  Deeply laid is the foundation.  The builders laying the base know not the height of the future towers, but the architect already has designed their height.  Some structures grow only in austerity and with great difficulty.      -Leaves of Morya's Garden 1924

                                     ( -N. Roerich:  Fiat Rex, 1924)
…………………….........................................…........................
II, ii, 1.  Maitreya sends courage; Maitreya will accept the gift. …Discern the Teaching of light in each manifestation.  Resourcefulness is a quality of my pupils.
II, iii, 7.  To be prepared, to be self-denying, to be abused, to be calumniated, to be joyful, to be silent, to be jubilant, to be the bringing and the bestowing one, and to be in this life taught by the light of the Sun is to be as we wish to see you; and as such We are dispatching you. Thus has your spirit accepted the mission.
II, ix, 13.  People often lack discipline of spirit and a sense of co-measurement. The key to the next attainment is the most difficult step on the path.  Therefore many beginners consider the path of an adept like galley slavery.
II, x, 2.  Everywhere guardians are walking behind you.  Time flies - hurry to store up knowledge!  Joyously accept the austerity of achievement.
II, x, 4.  Few are the workers.  Man, in pursuit of the miraculous, has lost the Guiding Hand.  Again we come into the world, again we bring the testimony of Spirit.  Now we shall decide the victory in battle and in the laboratory of the scientist.  Man will be in tremor when above him the sword will be raised and a voice will shout "Awaken!"           -Leaves of Morya's Garden 1925

66.  Only reckless courage can turn the structure upwards into strata untried and beautiful in the maintenance of new elements.  Therefore I speak and shall say again that outworn forms must be avoided in the structure.  Sinking back into the old receptacles is inadmissible.  Understanding of the new world in all its austerity is needed.
89.  It is impossible to force the perception of the manifestation of the worlds; but indeed through this cognizance do we accept responsible labor and devote ourselves to the real possibilities of evolution…. I do not see a single detail of dialectics or methodics.  We know only the austere flowers of necessity.  And it is necessary to reach us carrying a realization of immutability.
99.  Indeed the community does not admit the thief who through theft affirms the worst aspect of ownership.  Manifest austerity, know how to respect secrecy.
141.  It is of no purpose to worship dead words.  It is far more joyful to see how the resonance of sound penetrates and convinces.  Everyone understands that not words convince but the sendings of the brain center.  Sugary speech can attain its goal because of its impression upon the listener.  One is more likely to conquer by a silent gesture than by cold rhetoric.
155.  Let us give you a picture of our community.  Our resources are intensified for the common good. Everyone works in full readiness. Our wireless communication has brought an urgent appeal - personal action is needed. The elect council designates an executive agent….What induces the selected one joyfully to take himself off, what helps him to hasten into the cold and over the blocks of ice?  What sort of order can evoke this strenuous labor?  This jubilant readiness grows from habitual watchfulness.
162.  Once according to an old legend, there came a messenger from a distant world to give people equality, brotherhood and joy.  Long since had people forgotten their songs.  They remained in a stupor of hate.  The messenger banished darkness and crowdedness, smote infection and instituted joyful labor.  Hatred was stilled, and the sword of the messenger remained on the wall.  But all were silent and knew not how to begin singing.  Then the messenger assembled the little children, led them into the woods, and said to them "These are your flowers, your brooks, your trees.  No one has followed us.  I shall  rest--you fill yourselves with joy." Thereupon timidly they ventured into the forest.  At last the littlest one came to a meadow and sighted a ray of the Sun. Then a yellow oriole sounded its call . The little one followed it, whispering, and soon joyously he sang out "The Sun is ours!"  One by one the children gathered upon the meadow, and a new hymn to light rang out.  The messenger said "Man has again begun to sing--come is the date!”
191.  Think, ponder sternly on the immutability of the community.  The best joy emanates from austerity.
196.  Fetishism by its very nature is limited.  But precisely matter manifests victory through understanding of freedom.  Realists must be free as otherwise the light of realism sinks into the darkness of fetishism.  Penetration into the nature of Spirit-matter as the radiant crown of humanity creates the jewel of life.
237.  To renounce or to multiply?  Indeed, to multiply sanguinely, joyfully but for the common good. The smallest hint of sectarianism or bigoted limitation will contradict the sunlike evolution of the community.  Austere joy avoids darkness.  Moles of forbiddance and limitations will never see the Sun.
254.  Austere goal-fitness obliges one to preserve true treasures.  Lose not time in defending values.  Each hour counts; and reject expressions of uncertainty.  And each value is to you as sail is to the ship.          -M:  Community 1926

407.  The Teaching based on experience brings to each thinker the joy of application.  Do not limit that which is immeasurably great and close to the active consciousness. Do not constrict within preset limits that which comes down to us as the breath of the Mother of the World.  Let us say how joyful it is to serve the cause of renewal without fear of taking the wrong path.  Beginning with the most obvious and tangible, following the immutable Laws let us apply our best efforts to the Teaching of Life.
557.  Austerity brings order; softness brings creation.  Let us look into the empty basket too to see whether a seed of life is not hidden even in the bitterest bark.
-M:  Agni Yoga 1929

281.  Love of achievement is not austere for those aflame in heart, but it frightens those who love their weaknesses and who waver while embracing their own illusionary "I."  Love that can move worlds does not resemble the love upon the marshes where the bones of outworn remains are decaying.  Above the marshes are the will-o'-the-wisps of decay, but the eternal creative fire of the heart does not wander, it impetuously ascends by the steps of Hierarchy to highest light.  Love is the leading creative principle.      -M:  Hierarchy 1931

69.  People are accustomed to cover their idiosyncrasies with complaints.  But precisely, humanity is not bereft of Guidance; it should pay attention to all that is given!  Many impulses that arise through spiritual influence are lost not only without benefit but even become injurious by remaining misconstrued in storehouses of consciousness.  It can be stated that a minimum fraction of suggestion finds fitting application; especially obstructive are the habits that impel the consciousness into conventional paths.  They also deplete the abilities of the heart when it is prepared to re-echo to highest guidance.  It is exactly the heart which knows the highest from the lowest; but the enfeebled, obscured heart will itself be at the lowest level where even the lowest will appear to be the highest.  Purity of heart is the most essential possession.  Wisdom, courage, self-sacrifice cannot be contained in an obscured heart.  But Guidance will suggest deeds of heroism.
121.  When I call to strive toward me it means that amidst the battle a dangerous moment has arisen, and the unification of hearts is needed…. When the builders of a great plan are called there can be no relativity.  When the hour is dangerous the heart aches.  One may think of many causes, but the basis of anguish and alarm is one, namely the austere part of the battle.  It would be impossible to imagine a battle as an advance without obstacles.  Thus we are on guard and we call the co-workers to stand solidly.              -M:  Heart 1932
……………………………………………............................
428.  Slander is especially harmful for the slanderers themselves.  This truth should be remembered by people who have bad habits.  A thought corresponding to reality forms a vehicle for an elemental.  Everything worthy, austere, vital, gravitates toward creative thought and will beneficently sustain its creator.  But the devices of slander will attract brooding elementals, who failing to find a vital foundation will precipitate themselves upon the slanderer…. It is most disagreeable to find oneself in the subtle realm in the midst of raging elementals.  Terrible is such a maelstrom filled with the fragments of one's own malicious thoughts.  All these creatures clutch at one and hang on, acquiring an actual physical weight.
626.  Giving is a fundamental principle of the fiery divinity of the Spirit.  The analogy with fire is striking in all stages of development.  From crudest forms of life up to the highest, giving is manifest.  One should not protest if a savage, not cognizant of the value of spiritual gifts, offers his deity his household treasures.  By such circuitous paths humanity attains the highest giving.  Being of lofty degree understand giving as a joyful duty.  One should strive for this degree of fieriness, for then we enter into balance with the fiery principle and giving becomes receiving.  Then, already devoid of selfhood, one's being accepts the highest gifts, and in such accelerated exchange an inflow of energy takes place.  This constant regeneration renews consciousness and spares one breaks in consciousness during transition into  subtle realms.
634.  Self-control is a very complex quality; it comprises courage, patience and compassion.  But courage must not become anger, compassion should not border on hysteria, and patience must not be hypocrisy.  Thus self-control is complicated, but it is imperatively needed upon entering the higher realms.  One should develop this synthesized quality with utmost care.  In schools students should be confronted with the most unexpected circumstances….
This is not the austere Spartan schooling of physical endurance and resourcefulness, it is drawing upon heart-energy in order to apprehend things with dignity. … It must be remembered that in approaching Light one must carry one's own lamp unspilled. Such guiding perfection must be acquired in the physical state. Therefore experienced people ask for tests; otherwise upon what can they affirm their strength? Let each earthly action lead to the higher path.           -M:  Fiery World 1933
……………………………………………...............................…................
136.  Not the consciousness of one's merits but the offering of oneself in all entirely helps one to pass over the threshold. When the gift is complete it leads past all frightening manifestations. One may say to the dwellers on the thresholds "I've no time to gaze at you!"  Thus the offering brings ease.
176.  above all certain ones strive to apply their own forces in order to conserve every ounce of higher energy.  They do not even pronounce the name of the Teacher, and they guard their mantram in secret.  One should regard very carefully the various modes of reverence.  One should affirm all that aspires to the light.  With us only negation is rejected…..People dream about the mechanical prolonging of life here instead of cultivating a joyful readiness to approach the goal.  The Teacher brings the consciousness of the disciple, by the shortest path, toward the attainment of the fiery realms.  The Teacher affirms all that which may, even indirectly, bring closer or unify useful consciousnesses in order that each action contain within itself the necessary amount of conditions of approach.      -M:  Fiery World 1934

479.  Accustom children to detect currents of life-giving warmth.  Help children to smile joyfully at a true manifestation of Existence.  Keep them from the worship of phantoms.
490.  Leave the dead to bury the dead and rejoice in the formation of life.  Say to friends—take notice, observe sharply.
-M:  Fiery World 1935
……..
113.  Prayer must be joyful…it is possible only through realization of goal-fitness.  It will be salutary through fullness of trust.  It resounds with courage when the path is one.    -M:  Aum 1936

That which is most joyful lives in the consciousness that there exists cooperation of Knowledge.     -M:  preface to Brotherhood 1937
41.  What is the natural path?  The most unrestricted way of learning, with tolerance and patience, without any sectarianism.  Unrestricted cognition is not easily adopted. Everything connected with human labors is limited. Every occupation cuts short, as it were, many ways of communion. Even excellent minds have been driven into a narrow channel. The disease of self-limitation bears no resemblance to self-sacrifice. Man limits himself for his own comfort. Indeed, bold actions for the sake of unrestricted knowledge will be the exception. Malice and hatred carry out their actions in straitness of mind. For unconfined action it is necessary for one to be filled with magnanimity and to discover causes and effects with a benevolent eye.
58.  The very austerity of labor can acquire a beautiful meaning by the elimination of all coarsening effects and the introduction of the concept of cooperation. It must be remembered that coarseness is contrary to all laws of nature. Every coarse action creates such a hideous vortex that if people could but see it they would certainly be more careful in their conduct.
121.  One should know how to conquer the illusion of contradictions.  It is needful on the one hand to cultivate kindheartedness and on the other to understand austerity.  For many such a task is completely insoluble; only the heart can prompt when the two qualities will not contradict each other.  The heart will prompt when it is necessary to rush to the help of one's neighbor.  The heart will indicate when to stop short the madness of a fierce animal….Unwritten are the laws of the heart, but only therein does justice dwell, for the heart is the bridge of the worlds.
197.  Verily the Teaching of Life is the touchstone.  No one passes by without exposing his essential nature.  Some rejoice, some are terrified, some are indignant.  Thus each one must reveal what is hidden in the depths of his consciousness.  Be not amazed that the reactions to the Teaching are so diverse and so striking.  Narada similarly struck different sparks from human consciousnesses….Evil and good must be distinguished, but such discrimination is not easily made.
277.  Many observations and experiments confront a man before he can encounter joyfully the face of Infinity.  Gone will be regret for human creations which have been dissolved….A man wishes to bring good to humanity, but instead of the fruits of his labor there lies before him an unfathomable abyss.  A formidable mind may shudder at that, but the tempered, manifested warrior of labor sees before him not a chasm but the radiance of Infinity.
331.  Actually calamities can turn humanity back to austere thinking. You have noticed more than once that great calamities have transformed a people.  Affirmation of wholesome principles has come in thunder and lightning.
338.  When concordance is based not on conventional agreement but on heart cooperation, the manifestation of thought is especially intelligible and authoritative.  One need not be surprised that the concept of Brotherhood requires so many consonances.  These vibrations are joyful ones.
595.  (Besides gazing upward there is) another means of cognition--man heroically uplifts his consciousness and then observes manifestations from above.  Thus the most complex manifestation will appear to be below his consciousness and will be easily apprehended.  The second means of perception is the path of Brotherhood.  By austere and inspired measures it awakens the consciousness and leads it upward in order the more easily to perceive the most complex manifestations.  This means of uplifting the consciousness is especially needed in a time of pressure and cumulations.  It can be applied in each sagacious school of thought, but it should be known as the path of Brotherhood.      -M:  Brotherhood 1937
……………..........................................................................…
98.  People suppose that heroic deeds are performed spontaneously without preparation, but in reality many thoughts must take form before a firm decision to carry out a selfless act can be made.
130.  There is a great difference between the unconscious and the consciously determined heroes.  In the first there may be a spontaneous exaltation.  But although temporary reactions may occur and cause the determined ones to pull back, they will never give up and will continue on their path, applying cosmic knowledge accumulated through centuries.  They know how to transmute knowledge into feeling and how to fill their hearts with it.  Where the heart is full there is a soaring into the future.  An austere knowledge of danger inspires the hero.        -M: Supermundane 1, 1938
…………………………………………………………......................

356.  But how can man train himself for austere defense without contemplating cosmos?  In practicing defense man displays the highest self-denial--he acts not for himself but for the far-off realms.  Everyone can understand that it is not easy to forget oneself for the sake of the far-off worlds.  An expanded consciousness must go hand in hand with a solicitous attitude toward one's health; human forces are frail compared to the currents of space.    -M: Supermundane 2, 1938
