The fragments and dust of the husks of the past fill space too much.

II, iv, 3.  We are absolutely averse to monasteries as they are the antithesis of life; only the seminars of life, communities of the best manifestation of labor, shall find our assistance.  Indeed through life one must attain; it is precisely the generally-accepted religiousness that is unnecessary.  The facts of conscious communion with the Abode of Light are needed.  Let us say we wish to bring help, so we proceed consciously without magic to the practical Source.  In this simplicity is contained the entire current secret, as yet so inaccessible to men who walk up to their waists in prejudice.  It is difficult for them to understand simplicity, beauty and fearlessness.
III, v, 5.  If you are accused of economy, do not reject this, for economy is opposed to madness, and madness is opposed to Spirit-knowledge.  But whatever circle of reasoning we choose we shall inevitably return to the great knowledge of the Spirit.
III, vi, 7.  In communal occupations do not indulge in thoughts about the recent past; think either about the future or the wisdom of the ages.  The fragments and dust of the husks of the past fill space too much.  Attracted by the magnet of thought they weave unclean phantoms which are difficult to drive away; expelled from one corner they camp in another until they are again reduced to dust by a conscious stroke of the will.
III, vi, 13.  Since man must be a co-worker of evolution animals too must conform to this law.  Species which do not conform to evolution become extinct.  Those adaptable to evolution must maintain their capacity for labor….it is necessary to study the true usefulness of animals.  It is vain to think that pleasiosaurs are needed for the future; grandmother’s dress is very touching in a museum but poorly adapted to present-day life.  Animals must work, they must win the right to life; hence both cruelty and sentimentality are inapplicable.  One cannot but love everything vitally laboring.

25.  Since time immemorial prophecies have been issued from our Community as benevolent signs for humanity. The paths of prophecies are diverse— either they are suggested to particular people or they may be inscriptions left by some unknown hands.  Prophecies best of all inform mankind.  Indeed the symbols are often obscured, but the inner meaning creates a vibration.  Certainly a prophecy requires alertness and aspiration.
45.  I point out that it is important to send good arrows opportunely, and that the spirit then feels at ease.  Like a gray swarm infecting the air fragments of alien thoughts rush about and gradually encumber space. Then comes the arrow of the spirit which is like lightning.  It not only reaches the designated person but also purifies space.  This purifying of space is not less important.  A purer arrow, being a stronger magnet, draws to itself the gray fragments and bears them backwards.  In such a manner gray thoughts, with their weight, are returned to the fountainhead but without injury to others….True, it is possible to admit the sword of indignation of the spirit but only in rare cases, for indignation of the spirit wears away the sheath.
127.  every community based on labor and the knowledge of reality does not harm the processes of perfectionment of humanity.  Due to the motion of the cosmos it is impossible to remain immobile; there is either backward or forward movement.  All who realize consciously the community move forward.  And there cannot be communities opposed to each other, just as one cannot contrast different aspects of the sensation of hunger.  Thus against the community will speak only he who has begun to move backwards, entering into the formation of cosmic refuse.
143.  One may wish either to proceed by the difficult way or to apprehend the usefulness of cooperation, but the direction of evolution remains unchangeable.
179.  Could unexpectedness test fear or falsehood?  Precisely, unexpectedness.  Necessity will not be the deciding factor.  A thief before a judge seems a model of honesty.  Look at him not before the judge but in the darkness of an alley.  Do not reject testings, for the solution of life's achievement must be tested by fire, as steel.  Those who trust words are either inexperienced or are not steadfast.  Experiment can pass into immutability only through unalterable striving.
264.  Knowing the place to find co-workers you will never remain alone.  It would be senseless to leave co-workers in ignorance.  What then compels strangers not to trust to communication with our Community?  Either complete ignorance or envy.  They wish to be admitted to the Central Apparatus, not having the slightest idea as to how to make use of it and not thinking how responsible a matter it is to approach the Source of Energy.  Affirmation of the Teaching of Life permits approach to the most perilous levers.  But without practical experience no explanation is of assistance.     -M:  Community 1926

429.  Again one has to remind scientists that the theories of Einstein do not upset the laws of Euclid but encompass them.  Just as the third dimension does not nullify the laws of the plane but is infinitely larger than the latter, so also the laws of spiritual knowledge encompass all your laws, being infinitely broader.  Therefore lay antagonism aside as an impediment to evolution.     -M:  Infinity 2, 1930

68.  Darkness, the antithesis of Light, is nothing but unmanifested Chaos.  The dark ones denigrate the manifestation of the combat of the creative Light against Chaos….But the dark ones have reduced the mastery of unbridled elements to the egoism of rebels and have begun to call forth Chaos instead of transmuting it into a working force. …The creative vanquishing of Chaos, or the "Dragon," is a constant achievement.     -M:  Hierarchy 1931

55.  The manifestation of a powerful personality devoted to the general good is beyond the imagination of many, but without personality thinking would not have potency.  The tendency of thought when egoistic adds one more portion of poison to the infested aura of the planet.  It is also difficult for many to realize that the substance of thought is indestructible and is not bound to the strata of space, which means that the responsibility for each thought is great.
66.  Verily a rose is a symbol of consonance, and the dominant of the radiation of the rose is linked with the glow of the heart.  Not a few experiments have been made with sound on plants, but the ancients believed that the finest flowers grew by the temples where there were numerous harmonies of voice and music.
327.  Silence has many delicate voices, and to observe their rhythm means to come closer to the subtle realm.  But in studying silence it is instructive to recognize the dissonance of each physical intrusion….as you have noticed the subtle realm is full of odors—the higher, the more perfect they are; but the lower strata are full of decomposition.  If disincarnated beings are delayed in the lower strata, they carry around themselves the shell of decomposition; therefore during life it is very useful to get accustomed to the flight into the higher strata.
336.  Each one who is argumentative deprives himself of the great communion with the Above.  Do not let us confuse reason and conditioned reasonings.  Reason leads to wisdom, in other words, to the heart.  But a worm argues, even though he crawls with difficulty across the path of men.  Therefore let us persist in the achievement of the heart because in it is the coffer of ecstasy, which cannot be acquired with gold.       -M:  Heart 1932

261.  Do not measure evil by its length.  Actually a small viper corresponds more closely to evil since proportionately greater destruction issues from it.  Let us not rely upon external measurements; evil seeks to undermine through minute entities.  Likewise disintegration begins with the smallest.  One can observe how the essential nature of an entire nation is changed within one generation.  Whole ages are not needed where the viper of treason has built its nest.  It is astonishing how, beneath our very eyes, the dignity of a nation crumbles; but human minds usually do not grasp such a striking occurrence.        -M:  Fiery World 1933

348.  Do indeed people wish to know those roots of evil which destroy constructiveness?  Closing the eyes to the existence of evil and its source abases man to a still lower level.  The fact that the evil principle exists as opposition to Light is long since known.  Just as good is manifested in limitless ways and aspects so also is darkness.  True, mankind prefers the way of unmanifested evil.  Indeed such darkness is very attractive to the small consciousness because it is not necessary to expiate flamingly its actions….The consciousness of mankind is truly deprived of co-measurement!      -M:  Fiery World 1935

38.  The antithesis of prayer is profanity; it defiles and disturbs space.  It is forbidden to have in the cities factories that produce poisonous gases; yet the consequences of blasphemy and foul speech are far more harmful.  People are unwilling to free themselves from the most harmful substance which generates appalling disasters, not to mention sicknesses caused by disturbances of the atmosphere.  More terrifying than any diseases are the destructions of the strata near the planet.  How many prayers and good thoughts are required to fill these abysses and ulcers in space!  If arid deserts and cyclones are dangerous, the very same danger is courted when humanity ravages the regenerative forces surrounding it.       -M:  Aum 1936

182.  The sword is tempered with fire and cold water; likewise the spirit will be strengthened in the fire of exaltation and under the cold of defamations and ingratitude.  One need not be surprised that vilification customarily attends each achievement.  Service is attended by ingratitude.  Such tempering has been observed since times immemorial, but the antithesis of fire and water is too little understood.             -M:  Brotherhood 1937

336.  We shall not tire of reminding you that one of the signs of Armageddon is the enormous increase in the numbers of false preachers; they appear in all countries and offer whatever the crowds desire.  We shall not belabor their distortions of life, but we can lament them.     -M:  Supermundane 2, 1938
