6)    Instead of being tricked, Alstom, Siemens, and their rivals Bombardier Inc. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. agreed to hand over some of their most precious intellectual property with their eyes wide open.  The vast majority of the trains sold under the 2004 and 2005 contracts were built in China, with explicit technology transfer terms written into the agreements to allow that. 13)    US-based Motorola's presence in China dates back to the late 1980s when, Motorola established a representative office in Beijing in 1987. It exported telecommunications gear and semiconductors to China and employed around 600 people to market its products.  With increasing competition and production costs, Motorola decided to shift some of its manufacturing activities to China.  In 1992, Motorola established Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. and opened a manufacturing facility at Tianjin city in North China.   The first of its two days will feature activities and events around the city hosted by several MIT programs, including DUSP’s China Future City Lab, Sloan’s International Faculty Fellows program, the student-run MIT China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (MIT CHIEF), the Alumni Association, and others.  The second day is a plenary conference; designed to demonstrate MIT’s interest in working with and learning from China and to communicate the values and principles most important to us in research and education, it will feature 15 MIT faculty as well as leaders from China’s scientific and business sectors.

18)     11-28-18    Chinese scientists have made no secret of their ambitions to one day eclipse GPS in both technical precision and international sway.  Eventually, BeiDou’s global network will have 35 satellites in orbit, with the highest ratio over the Asia Pacific region for greater accuracy. 
  “China’s BeiDou is the world’s BeiDou, and the global satellite navigation market is certainly BeiDou’s market,” Yang Changfeng, the system’s chief engineer, told state media last year. 
  BeiDou’s engineers are looking to best the US in the dimension of time as well. Beyond positioning and navigation, GPS satellites currently set international time and frequency standards. …
  China’s rapidly modernising military, the People’s Liberation Army, also relies on BeiDou. Both GPS and BeiDou contain at least two signal channels. One for commercial use is capable of fixing a location for civilian users precise to 2.5m to 5m; a separate channel several times more exact is reserved exclusively for state and military use, whose encryption codes can be given to allies for use in times of emergency. 
  For decades, the technical superiority of GPS gave the US unrivalled capabilities in global mapping and location services, expertise it sometimes extends to a small number of Nato allies.
