world news update

6-6-18     But Kim Jong Un cannot benefit from their (family members advocating loosening of N. Korea) support in his reputed liberalization campaign because he had them murdered.
In the current preparations for the summit, what is seldom noted is how few of Kim’s very close advisors have been brought in to witness their leader’s new and exciting approach toward the U.S. and South Korea.  The head of the rubber-stamp legislative body (the Supreme People’s Assembly) attended the welcoming ceremony at the Olympics but was sent home immediately after.  Only “Princess” Kim Yo Jong and spy-chief Kim Yong Chol stayed to initiate the charm offensive. They are essentially the only two people who have been trusted to deal with Seoul and New York and Washington.     http://thehill.com/opinion/national-security/390971-all-signs-point-to-north-korea-preparing-a-bait-and-switch#bottom-story-socials

6-6-18   IMTUU Head Ihor Chaika called the arrest of Roman Sushchenko "a cynical abduction organized by Russian security services."
Earlier, Oksana Romanyuk, Executive Director of the Institute of Mass Information and a Reporters Without Borders representative, called the verdict by the Moscow City Court a bright example of the violation of freedom of speech by Russia.
In addition, the demand for Sushchenko's release was put forward by the OSCE. OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Desir hopes that the decision to imprison Sushchenko will be overturned in appeal.
On June 4, the Moscow City Court sentenced Sushchenko, a correspondent of the Ukrainian National News Agency, Ukrinform, to 12 years in prison in a high-security prison on espionage charges.  He has been under arrest in Moscow since September 30, 2016.    https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-sushchenko/2475247-media-workers-demand-russia-release-sushchenko.html

Kyiv, human rights activists and Western governments say Russia has jailed several Ukrainians on trumped-up, politically motivated charges since Moscow seized the Crimean Peninsula in March 2014 and threw its support behind armed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Sushchenko, a Paris-based correspondent for the Ukrinform news agency, was detained in Moscow in 2016 on suspicion of collecting classified information.
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has claimed that Sushchenko works for the Ukrainain Defemse Minitsry and that he gathered information about the Russian military and National Guard.  Sushchenko pleaded not guilty at the start of his trial in March.    https://www.rferl.org/a/russia-ukraine-moscow-court-sentences-ukrainian-journalist-to-12-years-in-prison-for-espionage/29270440.html
