Although they may seem to do so, mantras do not bestow magical powers from the outside; instead they draw forth and focus forces within the person chanting them. The sheer sound of a mantra has the power to resonate with the deeper levels of mind and awaken them. But for this to happen it must be chanted correctly, and this must be learned from an experienced teacher. The written mantra is like a musical score that we must learn to read and play, otherwise it remains so many dead markings on a page, a source of mumbo jumbo. The teacher not only shows his student or disciple how to intone the syllables and what feelings to bring to them but he also initiates him into the experience of energy and awareness that they are supposed to arouse. In this way the mantra becomes associated with that energy and awareness and the student can use it to call them back at will and deepen and control his experience of them. It works a little like a melody that brings back the memory of the beautiful evening when it was first heard.
