534. It is wrong for people not to pay attention to the effects of eating during irritation and agitation. Very strong poisons are formed by this unwise procedure. Many days must pass before this poison will dissolve. It should be remembered that hunger is far better than harmful food. During irritation and excitement I advise milk in all forms as a customary antidote. Sodium bicarbonate strengthens the action of milk. The ability to recognize disquietude is already a considerable step toward the education of the heart. You remember to what an extent the Teacher sends rays at night, but even these rays act far more powerfully when they are recognized. The silence of the ancients during the meal had a sacred significance. But the understanding of sacredness also comprised the cure. Thus the heart and nerves can often be strengthened by a rational partaking of food….In the new world everything must be directed to good. -M: Heart 1932

482. Does not darkness impel people to the lowest actions? Let us not forget that mass killings whether in war or in the slaughterhouse equally pollute the atmosphere and violate the subtle world. It must be realized that every conscious killing shakes the entire surrounding atmosphere. Moreover these actions strengthen the forces of darkness and chaos, breaking the rhythm. One must avoid disturbing the subtle realm in any way. We can allow a diet of vegetables, farinaceous food and milk, also eggs, the very freshest and in a liquid state. You know how repulsive the very sight of meat becomes to the organism accustomed to a vegetable diet. Thus in practice one must accustom oneself to refinement and remember that even an elephant increases his strength through plants alone. One should not think that people eat meat because of poverty. With the least effort one can obtain a vegetable diet; besides, many nourishing herbs and roots are not utilized. One could learn much from certain animals, they know far more about natural foods than man, the meat-eater. Do not be concerned if the lover of blood scoffs at vegetable food. Many are indifferent to meat and are compelled to it only by ugly home conditions. We do not mean them. We deplore conscious vampires and necrophagi. Hence be simpler and more refined in your diet. -M: Fiery World 1933 |

489. People forget with what labor attainment is built. Scholars are already beginning to understand how a person enters into the pantheon of heroes. By the same path also are the qualities of the leaders of humanity accumulated. If they do not pass through earthly sufferings, they cannot respond to people's sufferings. If they do not experience the sweat of toil, they cannot guide people in their labor. Self-abnegation, mercy, compassion, courage are forged in life; nothing abstract can mold the strength of the spirit.

The criteria for action today among the majority of people are unfortunately their feelings. If they feel like doing something, they do it without taking into account the responsibility they have for every deed they do as well as for the deeds they do not do. They take pleasure in contemplating no period of accounting, no return of the energies they send out for good and for ill or of those they thoughtlessly waste.
Let them pause to think again; for all unwanted and negative conditions with few exceptions have their roots in the deeds that man has already done. The state of the world, of body, of mind, of feelings, of the total manifestation of each person is the combined effect of many experiences involving deeds, words, thoughts and entertainment of ideas from the near and distant past.
Where freedom of the individual is concerned each has a golden key forged out of the law of cause and effect that will open the door to his own freedom. When people understand the need to build wisely by thought, by feeling and by deed they will guard against the tendency to overreact to situations and people. How many times has Cain slain his brother simply because of overreaction?
One of the wisest safeguards against human bondage is self-control. But whereas self-control may prevent bad deeds, the mesmerism of lingering thought can stimulate them; and whereas self-control may hold back the flow of emotional reactions stemming from wrong thought, for man to be neither hot nor cold but lukewarm holding to a position of neutrality in all things does not necessarily produce the good karma of right use of life’s opportunities.
And so in addition to not thinking or doing evil man must think good and do good that he may use the precious life opportunities God has given him to promote not only his own freedom but also the freedom of others. Oh yes! you have heard this before, for the voice of God has spoken often in divers ways to man. The question is: has He been obeyed? Have His admonishments been heeded?…
Accept no dictum of mediocrity, accept no inflexible worldform. For it is the limitless attitudes of the Spirit which knit our Brotherhood together, as each one bows to the God in the other and in himself as each one humbly carries out his assigned tasks, and all join hands to lift the garment of the world.

Even though outer schools of Christianity or Buddhism or Hinduism may have lost the thread of this reason for being of the path of the bodhisattva, believe me, beloved ones, the epitome of attainment of the six-pointed star of the bodhisattva must include the victory as the warrior whereby the individual may fearlessly defend himself and his clan--that is to say, the cluster of devotees in his band--against every enemy within or without, subtle or gross. A very key point of the six is the attainment of that level of compassion whereby one is able to deal with all parts of life with poise, diplomacy, mercy, understanding and above all justice untainted by sympathy of the human sort but surely adorned with mercy’s delicate flame of the bodhisattva Kuan Yin. Beloved ones, the light of purity crowned by attainment of the thousand-petaled lotus is most essential.
