Fear of China

   The accusations of Huawei stealing trade secrets from across the world are hitting a fever pitch, thanks to a new Wall Street Journal expose that blows open accusations of theft and stealing of trade secrets.  The article includes 

insights from lawsuits, Huawei’s competitors and former employees.  Allegations run the gamut against the company: from its business practices, to the science behind its 5G, all the way down to copying the text it used in its user manuals.

  Huawei has grown into China’s global technology powerhouse, as a leader in 5G networks and giant maker of telecom equipment.  The company employs 188,000 people in more than 170 countries and sells more smartphones than Apple.  It also provides cloud services, manufactures microchips and runs internet cables undersea that help route global traffic…. 

 (Fear of China) didn’t stop Motorola from coming forward in 2010 and alleging Huawei of stealing their technology for a compact base station that connects devices in a wireless network called the SC300.   Motorola accused one of its employees - a relative of Huawei founder Ren - of flying back to Beijing to secretly show Huawei trade secrets for the device.   An e-mail from the employee's laptop showed him writing to Ren after the meeting, stating:  “Attached please find those document [sic] about SC300 specification you asked.”

     China was unified in 221 BC by Qin Shi Huang,  the "First Emperor".   The Qin Dynasty established a centralized system of government for all of China and standardized weights and measures, writing and currency to create unity.  The Han dynasty succeeded him in 206 BC, after a period of revolt.  With the invention of paper, powder, compass and the extent of commerce to the west along the Silk Road, and thanks to a relatively benevolent imperial domination, the Han period is considered to be the first golden age of Chinese civilization.

  The Tang Dynasty (June 18, 618 to June 1, 907) inaugurated the second golden age of Chinese civilization, marked by a blossoming of Chinese poetry, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism and the art of governing.   This dynasty developed the system of imperial examinations which aimed to select court officials by their skills rather than by their family ties.  The collapse of the Tang Dynasty once again divided China until it was reunited with the Song Dynasty, which ruled most of China for more than 150 years.  The Ming period was marked by trade and exploration, with Zheng He's many famous trips to South Asia, India and the Arab world.  Famous monuments in Beijing, such as the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall were built during this period.  The last Qing dynasty (1644-1911) saw the rise of the Chinese empire to its present size, incorporating the western regions of Xinjiang and Tibet.

10-11-18     Isa remembers hearing of Uyghur intellectuals being jailed by the thousands, and China preventing Uyghur cultural texts from being published.  Imams, as local figureheads whose religious beliefs stood against Mao’s secular project, were publicly humiliated.  A paramilitary student group who called themselves Red Guards burned Qurans and vandalized mosques throughout Xinjiang.  “During the 10 years [of the Cultural] Revolution time all the religious freedom and all the Uyghur language writings [were] forbidden,” Isa says.

Every nuclear generating station spews ~2/3 of the energy it burns into the environment

9-21-2016     Every nuclear generating station spews about two-thirds of the energy it burns inside its reactor core into the environment.  Only one-third is converted into electricity.  Another tenth of that is lost in transmission.  According to the Union of Concerned Scientists:

  Every day large reactors like the two at Diablo Canyon, California individually dump about 1.25 billion gallons of water into the ocean at temperatures up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the natural environment.   Diablo’s “once-through cooling system” takes water out of the ocean and dumps it back superheated, irradiated and laden with toxic chemicals.  Many U.S. reactors use cooling towers which emit huge quantities of steam and water vapor that also directly warm the atmosphere.  All nuclear reactors emit Carbon 14, a radioactive isotope, invalidating the industry’s claim that reactors are “carbon free.”  And the fuel that reactors burn is carbon-intensive.   And of course there’s the problem of nuclear waste.  After more than a half-century of well-funded attempts we’ve seen no solution for the management of atomic power’s intensely radioactive waste.      

  The mining, milling, and enrichment processes needed to produce the pellets that fill the fuel rods inside the reactor cores all involve major energy expenditures, nearly all of it based on coal, oil, or gas. …There are no credible estimates of the global warming damage done by the intensely hot explosions at the four Fukushima reactors, or at Chernobyl, or at any other past and future reactor meltdowns or blowups. …

  Overall the idea that atomic power is “clean” or “carbon free” or “emission free” is a very expensive misconception, especially when compared to renewable energy, efficiency and conservation.  Among conservation, efficiency, solar and wind power technologies there are no global warming analogs to the heat, carbon and radioactive waste impacts of nuclear power.  No green technology kills anywhere near the number of impacts of nuclear power.  No green technology kills anywhere near the number of marine organisms that die through reactor cooling systems….

  Nuclear fission is the most water intensive method of the principal thermoelectric generation options in terms of the amount of water withdrawn from sources.  In 2008 nuclear power plants withdrew eight times as much freshwater as natural gas plants per unit of energy produced and up to 11 percent more than the average coal plant….

  No terrorist will ever threaten one of our cities by blowing up a solar panel.  But the nuclear industry that falsely claims its dying technology doesn’t cause global warming does threaten the future of our planet.
