27. I will say that there is only one shield--Hierarchy. Therefore the disciple who considers his soft armchair higher than the throne of the Guru must verily remember the giving hand. I deplore it when a self-asserting disciple acts in arrogance.
170. Three traits of character will help to cognize the potentiality of motive: the trait of honesty, the trait of self-abnegation and the trait of service. The manifestation of each trait will give the spirit the sword against egotism. Not the hand of karmic tension but the hand of self-exertion will hold for the spirit that gleaming sword; let us remember that fire which gives tension to motive. -M: Infinity 2, 1930

28. Wondrous is the thought of a brotherhood on Earth. Each discipline of the spirit produces striving. Only the will can give discipline to the spirit, but when thought roams about in obvious egoism then verily there is no channel for a correct and vital action. Thus each applied thought will afford growth to the spirit.
112. After having chosen the Lord and Guru no retreat is possible. The path lies only onward, and sooner or later with ease or difficulties you will come to the Teacher. When the black ones surround you and close their circle there will remain only the path upward to the Lord. Then you will feel that the Lord is somewhere not far-off and that the silver thread is above you. You have but to stretch out your hand! We can meet without the help of the black ones, but more often only he who is pressed from all sides reaches out to the silver thread, and only in distress does he learn the language of the heart. One should feel the Lord and the Guru in the heart.
175. When creativeness of spirit can encompass great service then all paths to us are open….let all the pearls of Guru and Tara be guarded. Thus one can fulfill all given possibilities. The time is pregnant and tense! Therefore let the disciples strive to keep step with the rhythm of events; and consciousness should be strained in unison with all that occurs. Only thus does one conquer. -M: Hierarchy 1931

110. It is right that reverence for the Guru be the firm foundation of an entire people. Destruction of respect for the Guru will also be the cessation of achievements.
128. Why is treachery toward one's Guru such a revolting crime? During the first three years one may affirm one's consciousness, but after that the selection of the Guru becomes final. Such a law has deep significance. The Guru is the bridge to cognition of the higher world. Such an earthly step easily establishes a relationship with the higher world, therefore it is inadmissible to choose the Guru and then betray him—this would mean severing the bond with the higher world forever. One can fall under the darkest influence when the saving thread has been broken. Such people are still able to move, eat, sleep and slander, but the leprous infection may already have taken root. Likewise traitors can still vegetate but human dignity has been lost. Thus one can observe the wise laws which lay the foundation for living steps to the higher world.
149. Secrecy is also cautiousness and goal-fitness. One should plant flowers in appropriate soil, one should know when and to whom to intrust the seeds--thus does the concept of the Guru grow. In the simplest and most needed manner the Guru tells what is especially necessary. If he guards the secret, it means that this is temporarily imperative. There can be no suspicion that the Guru conceals harmfully. One must accept the Guru as guide, in such a manner the concept of the secret is transformed.
It is very important to assimilate the fact that the so-called great mystery is not an obstacle but only the guarding of the path. If it is because of mistrust and fear that a man has not yet started his journey, then no measure will advance him. On such a path the wayfarer turns back, but to retreat is abhorrent. Therefore the Guru helps find the best path; he will explain secrecy as an undefiled treasure.
490. Since olden times the ordained concept of the Guru was extremely significant--reverence and devotion and love live around this concept. -M: Aum 1936

367. Uttering the name of the Guru also creates a strong bond, but this too must be done with serenity for any excessive exertion will invariably produce a disturbed atmosphere.
