5-31-16 Before she was locked in a Libyan brothel on the shores of the Mediterranean, Betty Sodipo, a Nigerian migrant, was pinned to the ground in the house of the man who owned her and beaten by five women. They stripped her, shaved her head and pubic hair, and cut the inside of her thighs with a razor before collecting the blood in a small bottle. “They used my blood and hair to put a spell on me,” said Ms Sodipo, 29, a mother of two who was lured from her home near Lagos by the promise of a good job in a faraway land, only to find herself incarcerated in Libya, where witchcraft was used to try to bond her into sex slavery. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/migrants-duped-into-sex-slavery-by-african-gangs-0kmkvxgt2

Migrants arrive at a naval base after they were rescued by Libyan coastal guards in Tripoli, Libya [Ismail Zitouny/Reuters] Hundreds of African refugees are being bought and sold in "slave markets" across Libya every week, a human trafficker has told Al Jazeera, with many of them held for ransom or forced into prostitution and sexual exploitation to pay their captors and smugglers.
Many of them ended up being murdered by their smugglers in the open desert or die from thirst or car accidents in the vast Libyan desert, said Salman*, the human trafficker.
A morgue in the southern city of Sabha - an entry point for many refugees coming from Africa - is overflowing with corpses, with faulty refrigerator making the situation worse, according to a Libyan health official. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/11/african-refugees-bought-sold-murdered-libya-171129103602048.html

10-20-16 (CNN) There were more reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases last year than ever before in the United States, according to the latest STD surveillance report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The annual report, which was released on Wednesday, showed that the rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis -- the three most commonly reported STDs in the nation -- increased between 2014 and 2015, reaching an all-time high.
Reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis rose by 19%, gonorrhea cases rose by 12.8%, and chlamydia cases rose by 5.9%, from 2014. All three STDs are curable with antibiotics, but most infections go undiagnosed and untreated, according to the CDC.
"We have reached a decisive moment for the nation," Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, said in a written statement (PDF).
"STD rates are rising, and many of the country's systems for preventing STDs have eroded," he said. "We must mobilize, rebuild and expand services -- or the human and economic burden will continue to grow.” https://www.cnn.com/2016/10/20/health/std-statistics-record-high/index.html

6-18-2013 The presence of thousands of brothels and hundreds of thousands of prostitutes has heightened competition and pushed prices down steeply in the German sex trade. One tourist from Florida, who visits the country three times annually to pay for cheap sex, compares the scene to a discount supermarket: “Germany is like Aldi for prostitutes,” he says.
Prostitution became legal in Germany in 2002, and the open sex trade has taken off in the years since. There are reportedly around 3,000 red-light establishments in the country, and 500 brothels in Berlin alone. It’s been estimated that more than 1 million men pay for sex in Germany every day.

12-28-2017 A Derby Bishop has said he is extremely concerned about the public neglecting sex slave and human trafficking issues, with victims infrequently found with mental conditions, pumped full of drugs and nearly losing themselves. "They are being treated like animals. Their treatment is horrific. This is happening in our communities," the Bishop said.

1-10-18 Redbridge, in east London, has become a magnet for vulnerable young women illegally trafficked by organised crooks, largely from Romania and other eastern European countries, who are then forced to sell their bodies on the streets and in "pop-up" brothels.
Parked vehicles with mattresses in the back have even been used as mobile brothels, police said.
The problem has become so bad, with men flocking to one street, where sex is openly sold, that police and council chiefs are trying to become the first in the country to issue on-the-spot £100 fines for kerb crawlers, to limit demand.
Police officers told a crime scrutiny meeting at Redbridge Town Hall they were currently "closing on average one brothel a week," Ilfordrecorder.co.uk reports.
A Met Police spokesman said: "We are seeing a movement into premises and that will continue to be a problem for us.
“We need the publics help as on the street it is far more visible.”
Redbridge Council was forced to set up a specialist prostitution scrutiny panel to deal with the issue, after residents complained and an online petition was launched.
Councillor Neil Patrick Zammett, is its chairman.
He said: "You can’t tell me that well over a hundred young Romanian women all meet in Bucharest and decide to book tickets to Ilford.
“It is more like organised crime and we need to look at how they get here.
“Criminals are making a lot of money out of it.” https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/907184/Romania-EU-prostitutes-trafficked-Redbridge-police-close-one-brothel-per-week
He described it as "absolutely horrendous" that very young girls were trafficked across national borders and between different locations in the borough.
He added: "Very few indigenous women are doing this and they are almost exclusively Romanian.
“It is not a short-term issue and we have to consider language issues, cultural appropriation and how to encourage them to come forward for us to help them.
“It is not right that vulnerable people have to live in this way when someone higher up the line is making big bucks.”
The Met Police targeted Ilford Lane in the summer after a spike of complaints from residents of girls out all night, used condoms thrown in gardens and people having sex in the street on dumped mattresses.
In one case mobile brothels with mattresses in the backs of vans were set up and later seized by police.
Hass Memish was involved in an operation that reduced numbers of on street prostitutes before the brothel issue exploded.
He said: "When I started, like I said, I was shocked. There were two or three girls on every corner. Between 20 and 30.”
Officers worked with detectives, seconded from the Romanian police, charities to combat the problem.
The scrutiny meeting heard less women are seen in the streets, but the moving brothel problem has taken over as organised crooks rent flats for the women to work from.
detectives are targeting the pimps and criminals who organise and trafick the prostitutes, not the women.
He said: "We want to offer them routes out of prostitution.
“The criminals that control the women, that’s where our investigation is focusing on.”
Women were handed community protection orders to try to get them away from traffickers, rather than being arrested, which is a last resort if they refuse to cooperate…. Police and the council now want to deter customers to decrease demand. https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/907184/Romania-EU-prostitutes-trafficked-Redbridge-police-close-one-brothel-per-week
