7-12-19  GENEVA — China fumed this week after 22 mostly Western countries rebuked its mass detention of Muslims in the restive Xinjiang region.  On Friday the Chinese delivered their answer:  praise from even more countries saying China has made Xinjiang safe and happy, including from Russia, Saudi Arabia.    -NYT

The founding of the People's Republic of China and its socialist system in 1949 laid the political and systemic foundation for the protection of human rights of all ethnic groups in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.  And the regional autonomy for ethnic minorities introduced in 1955 has helped further safeguard the rights of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang.
Irrespective of their population size, level of development and religious belief, all ethnic groups have been enjoying human rights, and the same political, economic, social and cultural rights as their Han counterparts thanks to various policies and measures introduced by the central government.  This in turn has helped restore stability and promoted socioeconomic development in Xinjiang.  http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2019-07/06/content_37488811.htm

7-8-19    The letter, “China is not an enemy,” is co-authored by former US assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs Susan Thornton, former U.S. ambassador to China J Stapleton Roy, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace senior fellow Michael D. Swaine, MIT political science professor M. Taylor Fravel, and Harvard professor emeritus Ezra Vogel.  An earlier version of the letter on the Post was titled, “Making China a U.S. enemy is counterproductive.”  The letter makes seven propositions on “the problems in the U.S. approach to China and the basic elements of a more effective U.S. policy.”
We concur that China is not the enemy.  But the same cannot be said of the Chinese Communist Party, whose subversive behavior since the “normalization” of Sino-U.S. relations four decades ago is clear evidence that it will, if left unchecked, establish the twenty-first century’s “evil empire.”    https://sinoinsider.com/2019/07/china-is-not-an-enemy-of-the-us-and-the-world-but-the-ccp-is/]

The Politburo meeting also reviewed the CCP Central Committee’s opinions on strengthening the CCP’s political work and two regulations, namely, the reporting of major issues and the selection of Party and government officials.   https://sinoinsider.com/2019/01/politics-watch-politburo-meeting-and-study-session-reveal-regime-crisis/

-Fang, Zhang

On February 20, China’s state news agency Xinhua announced that Fang Fenghui, former chief of staff of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC) Joint Staff Department, was sentenced to life in prison for bribery.
With only one sentence, Xinhua’s announcement was extremely brief.   It said that Fang was found guilty by “a military court” on a total of three crimes, including “accepting and offering bribes and holding a huge amount of property from unidentified sources.”  Other than being sentenced to life imprisonment, Fang was also “deprived of his political rights for life and had his personal properties confiscated.”…
Xinhua’s official statement announcing his expulsion was unusually harsh. Fang was accused of being “two-faced,” “disloyal and dishonest to the Party,” and “corrupted in politics and greedy in wealth,” and having “seriously violated the Party’s political discipline and political rules.”
The statement said that on “suspicion of offering and accepting bribes,” Fang had “huge amount of unexplained wealth.”  https://thediplomat.com/2019/02/former-top-general-fang-fenghui-jailed-for-life-for-bribery/

10-16-18   Last November, Xinhua revealed that Zhang Yang, 66, a former member of the CMC, “hanged himself at home” on the morning of November 23 while under a corruption investigation.  He is the highest-ranking military official to commit suicide under the anti-corruption campaign launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping.  China’s military’s official mouthpiece, the People’s Liberation Army Daily, condemned Zhang for “ending his life in such a shameful way.” …
In the latest statement, Xinhua said Zhang had “seriously violated the Party’s political discipline and political rules.”  Under “suspicion of offering and accepting bribes,” Zhang had “huge amount of unexplained wealth.”  https://thediplomat.com/2018/10/chinese-communist-party-expels-2-former-top-generals/
