Xinjiang looks nothing like Xi’s vision of an internationally cooperative, friendly China

5-16-2019  KSU, China—Western companies, including brand name apparel makers and food companies, have become entangled in China’s campaign to forcibly assimilate its Muslim population.
Adidas AG, Hennes & Mauritz AB, Kraft Heinz Co., Coca-Cola Co. and Gap Inc. are among those at the end of the long, often opaque supply chains that travel through China’s northwest region of Xinjiang. Residents there are routinely forced into training programs that feed workers to area factories, according to locals, official notices and state media.   https://www.wsj.com/articles/western-companies-get-tangled-in-chinas-muslim-clampdown-11558017472?mod=article_inline

4-23-2019  Orbiting 22,000 miles above Earth, a fleet of American-built satellites is serving the Chinese government in ways that challenge the U.S.  Nine of these satellites have been part of efforts to connect Chinese soldiers on contested outposts in the South China Sea, strengthen police forces against social unrest and make sure state messaging penetrates far and wide, according to corporate records, stock filings and interviews with executives.  https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-exploits-fleet-of-u-s-satellites-to-strengthen-police-and-military-power-11556031771?mod=searchresults&page=1&pos=1&mod=article_inline

10-9-2018   Five years after announcing Belt and Road Initiative, Xinjiang looks nothing like Xi’s vision of an internationally cooperative, friendly China....
As one Han Chinese man who has lived in Xinjiang for 20 years stated“Entire villages in Southern Xinjiang have been emptied of young and middle-aged people—all rounded up into ‘re-education’ classes. Only the elderly and the very docile are left in the villages.” Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have relocated the children of those taken to camps and placed them in orphanages.  On Oct. 1, Radio-Free Asia reported that China is also forcibly relocating “re-educated” adults, secretly sending them to prisons as far away as Heilongjiang province in China’s far northeast.    https://www.lawfareblog.com/chinas-human-rights-abuses-against-uighurs-xinjiang
