The World Economic Forum’s ‘First Movers Coalition’ climate change agenda was “modelled” off the effort to roll out vaccines during the Chinese coronavirus crisis, John Kerry said at a COP27 panel in Egypt on Tuesday. Appearing alongside WEF President Børge Brende and various corporate executives, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry said that it is urgent for the private sector to pair with governments to realise the goal of preventing the global temperature from rising and to save lives in the allegedly looming global climate crisis. “We have an enormous challenge before us to bring to scale new technologies and to harness the deeply capable capacity of private sector entrepreneurs in order to bring them to the table because without it, no government has enough money… we need everybody behind this,” Kerry said in a speech before the panel. “The idea behind the launch of the First Movers Coalition is pretty straightforward, we needed to create demand signals in the market where they didn’t exist, which takes boldness, it takes courage from these executives who have made the decision to be a part of this. The First Movers Coalition was established ahead of last year’s COP26 climate summit in Glasgow in partnership between the U.S. State Department and Klaus Schwab’s World Economic Forum. The green project seeks to sign up private firms to commit to green agenda efforts to reduce carbon emissions. “We modelled it somewhat on the experience on what happened with vaccines, the government said ‘we’ll pay for it, build it,’ and the same thing with SpaceX, if you build it we are going to use it and we’ll pay for it. “People who were putting capital at risk knew that they could get a return on that capital or at least cover their expenses in the case of something like vaccines, where human life was so at risk. Well, human life is at risk now in the context of the challenges of the global climate crisis,” Kerry warned. Biden's Democrats are facing a gargantuan struggle to hang on to Congress against Republicans who are less favourable to international action on climate change. A Republican victory could be a boon to former president Donald Trump, who had pulled the United States out of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Biden brought the United States back into the pact. Speaking on the sidelines of the UN's COP27 climate summit in Egypt, Kerry said "Even if we don't, President Biden is more determined than ever to continue what we are doing. And most of what we are doing cannot be changed by anybody else who comes along. ... The marketplace has made its decision to do what we need to do to respond to the climate crisis." Some 100 world leaders were attending the summit on Monday and Tuesday but Biden will come on Friday after the midterms. A Canadian broadcaster has claimed that Canadian Prime Minister just Trudeau was allegedly informed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was directly funding at least eleven candidates in the 2019 federal election. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) is said to have informed Prime Minister Trudeau that the CCP has tried to exert influence in Canada’s elections and even placed agents in the offices of elected members of parliament. The information comes from sources who allegedly told broadcaster Global News that the CCP has even gone as far as looking to “punish” Canadian politicians who have spoken out against China or are deemed to be a threat. Global News claims that none of the eleven candidates has been identified in the CSIS briefings but noted the CCP “interference network” had been active in both Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party and the opposition Conservative Party of Canada (CPC). The allegations centre around money allegedly funnelled from the Chinese consulate in Toronto to both the federal election candidates and campaign staff. It is said money was transferred by a member of the Ontario Provincial parliament and a staff member of a federal candidate, with at least $250,000 involved. The existence of the alleged police stations, three of which were located in Toronto, was revealed in September by the human rights group Safeguard Defenders. While the human rights group has claimed that the police stations are used to “persuade” Chinese nationals to return to China after claims of breaking Chinese law, the Chinese government has countered, claiming the stations actually provide renewal for driving licences and other services, such as IDs.
